Safety after laser deregulation
From October 1st 2010 there will be no restriction as to who can operate laser and IPL equipment. As an interim measure WhichLaserClinic.com now will only list clinics that have either been registered with the CQC or have been recommended by reputable laser equipment manufacturers to maintain standards until it is hoped the Government can reintroduce careful control.
Before October 2010 every laser and IPL clinic would be registered with the CQC (Care Quality Commission). Each provider would be inspected against the National Minimum Standards to provide an assurance of quality. If providers failed in any area they would risk being deregistered.
With no regulation from October cowboy clinics can setup with poor safety standards and flawed, unserviced equipment operated by people who are untrained. Even the Department of Health admitted that thousands of people undergoing laser treatment could be left with scars and burns as a result of an end to inspections of clinics.
The Government has stated that up to 3400 more people could be harmed each year as a result of deregulation. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said while lasers and IPL could be safe if administered in an "appropriate environment" and by a "properly trained clinician", the public should be aware that these procedures posed risks ranging from irritated skin to burns.
To ensure you find the right clinic not only does WhichLaserClinic.com check all clinics listed. There is also an independent feedback system so that previous testimonials can be seen and any bad practice rooted out.
