Philips Lumea

The Philips Lumea is an Intense Pulsed Light Product which works by firing a pulse of light which is transmitted down the hair to the root which heats up disrupting further growth. IPL is chosen for the majority of home machines as it is much safer to use than lasers, this can also be read as lasers are much more efficient at targeting melanin in hair by using a specific bandwidth but in untrained hands IPL is less hazardous.

The size of the device allows an area of 3cm x 1cm to be treated at any one time. Once contact is made between the treatment head and the skin the Lumea can be fired. It is recommended to slightly overlap as you move around the area to be treated.

In a clinic goggles should always be worn, however, goggles are not supplied with the Philips Lumea due to the much lower power levels and as the Philips Lumea will not fire unless it is pressed against the skin.

There are 5 light energy levels from 2 - 6.5J/cm².

Comparing this to professional IPL equipment which start at 7J/cm² for darker skin types whilst for lighter skin which start at 12-14J/cm². Energy levels are then increased gradually to the optimum for the client using the skill and experience of the IPL or laser operator. Professional IPL equipment has a maximum output of 70J/cm² and extensive wavelength filtering.

The 50,000 shots each lamp should last for will soon disappear if purchasing a previously used unit or buying one Philips Lumea for a group of friends.

Philips have helpful qualified staff available at their call centre so if you are having problems give them a call.

For a most effective treatment pre-shave the application area as long as you still experience regrowth (first treatments only).
