How does fractional skin rejuvenation work?

Minute sections of the skin are targeted with laser light, which penetrate into the dermis, to stimulate significant collagen renewal. The surrounding non-affected areas of skin aid the body’s natural recovery process, for dramatic results without significant downtime.

Am I suitable for this type of laser skin treatment?

Treatment is suitable for most people and highly recommended for individuals wanting a brighter, more even skin tone, smoother skin texture with improved skin elasticity, a reduction of wrinkles, reduced pore size and improvement to scars (including acne scars) and stretch marks.

How is the treatment carried out?

The skin is cleansed and in some circumstances, a topical anaesthetic may be applied 30 minutes prior to treatment. During treatment, the handpiece is moved over the skin delivering tiny microscopic laser beams. Typically treatment time varies depending upon the skin condition and the area being treated, but will range from 10 to 40 minutes. After treatment the skin is cooled and a calming lotion is applied. Protective eye wear must be worn during treatment.

How does the treatment feel?

A cooling device is often utilised to minimise discomfort during laser skin rejuvenation treatment. A warm, heating sensation may still be felt, but is considered tolerable by most people.

What should I expect after laser skin treatment?

You will experience a mild sunburnt sensation for a few hours after receiving this laser treatment and the skin may be red for 1 to 2 days. This is a normal sign that the skin is healing at a deep level. Swelling is likely but minimal, and resolves in 2 to 3 days. As the healing process occurs, your skin may have a ‘bronzed’ appearance that lasts from 3 to 10 days, depending on the treatment level. Your skin will naturally exfoliate and may flake as if you had mild sunburn.

Are there any side effects?

Skin redness, swelling and the bronzing appearance described above are all expected outcomes of treatment. Other adverse effects are rare but can include a small blister or temporary change to skin pigmentation, such as a darkening of the skin.

How many treatments are necessary?

Improvement is evident after the first session, but for optimum results 3 to 5 treatment sessions are often advised. Treatment is carried out every 2 to 6 weeks, depending upon the level of rejuvenation required.

Is the treatment effective?

Yes – The most advanced fractional laser system on the market today is used ensuring results are outstanding and long lasting.

Consultation Procedure

Prior to treatment you must first undergo a consultation where details about your medical history are obtained to confirm suitability. Before proceeding with the laser treatment you will also be asked to complete a consent form.

More about fractional laser skin resurfacing

Fractional laser resurfacing is a non-invasive treatment that uses a laser beam to target areas of skin which have been divided into thousands of microscopic treatment zones like pixels in a digital display. The laser treats a fraction of the skin ie. some zones are treated whilst others are left intact. Quicker recovery times are reported as the healthy areas maintain the tissue's ability for a faster recovery.

Fractional laser resurfacing is a relatively new treatment but is becoming a popular and effective way of treating various skin conditions such as sun damaged skin, scars, wrinkles, spider veins and many others.

Fractional laser treatment incorporates the advantages of ablative and non-ablative laser techniques. The word 'ablative' derives from the latin verb 'aufero' meaning to carry away.

Ablative treatment involves the removal of the epidermis and some of the dermal tissue. This procedure ultimately gives better results  however immediately after treatment skin may be redened resulting in an extended recovery period.

Non ablative laser treatment only effects the dermis without damaging the epidermis enabling faster recovery times without such severe side effects as the ablative type.
